Description of the Workshop
The workshop is designed to offer thorough guidance on various aspects of career advancement during the early stages of an academic career. The primary aspects of career development to be addressed during the workshop include:
- PhD Application Process: Designed to illustrate the diverse standards of different countries, this session will address critical elements of the PhD application process. Participants will learn to craft compelling cover letters, prepare writing samples, formulate PhD research proposals, and effectively engage with prospective supervisors, including strategies for soliciting recommendation letters.
- Grant Design and Application Process: This session will review some of the leading grant schemes across Europe tailored for early career researchers. It will cover both national funding schemes (e.g., those from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Leverhulme, and Juan de la Cierva) and European schemes (e.g., the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions). Participants will gain insights into crafting successful grant applications, understanding the evaluation criteria, and navigating the diverse submission deadlines unique to each country.
- Navigating Academic Publishing, Open Science, and Open Access: Explore today’s scholarly publishing landscape in a session designed to demystify the path from research to publication. We will discuss open science, open access, and emerging models of academic publishing, while also offering practical guidance on choosing the right venue, preparing a strong submission, navigating peer review, and managing the editorial process through a hands-on workshop.
Each session will be led by a panel of experienced researchers along with invited speakers from leading institutions worldwide (full list of speakers to be published shortly; you can find the list of speakers from the previous editions of the workshop here: SEED#2024, SEED#2025)
