Workshop on Platonism in Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Mathematics: Ancient and Contemporary

The workshop explores the lasting influence and shifting interpretations of Platonism in the history of metaphysics and the philosophy of mathematics, tracing its development from ancient origins to contemporary transformations.

Call for abstracts 

We invite graduate students (both MA and PhD) and early career scholars (within five years of obtaining the PhD) to submit abstracts for this workshop. We welcome submissions engaging with any aspect of Platonism in metaphysics and philosophy of mathematics broadly construed—historical, systematic, comparative, or critical. Topics may include (but are not limited to):

  • The nature of forms, universals, and abstract entities
  • The relationship between metaphysical realism and Platonism
  • Anti-Platonist or nominalist critiques
  • Platonism’s implications for ontology, logic, or the philosophy of mathematics
  • The ontological status of mathematical objects in the Platonist tradition
  • Not-being, absence and nothingness

Each accepted paper will be assigned a commentator.

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstract length: maximum 400 words (excluding bibliography).
  • Format: anonymized PDF, suitable for blind review.
  • Language: English (preferred) or Italian 
  • Deadline10 January 2026 (noon, CET).
  • Notification of acceptance: by 31 January 2026.
